Commently is a browser extension that generates an AI-written reaction comment from text you select. This page describes what data is processed and why.

Data we process

• Selected text. When you click "Make a comment", the selected fragment is sent to our server and then to the Anthropic (Claude) API — solely to generate the response. We do not store this text after the request is processed.
• Device identifier. A random, anonymous identifier generated in your browser and stored locally. It is used only to count your daily limit of free comments. It is not linked to your identity.
• Your context ("about me") and voice samples. Optional fields in the settings. "About me" is stored locally in your browser (chrome.storage.local). If you use the Pro "Your voice" feature, the samples you paste are stored on our server (Upstash), linked only to your anonymous device identifier, and sent to the model to match your writing style. You can clear them anytime by emptying the field and saving.
• Billing data (Pro only). If you subscribe to Pro, payment is handled by Stripe. Stripe collects your email and payment details; we never see or store your card number. We store your email and a Stripe customer identifier solely to grant Pro access and let you manage your subscription.

What we do NOT do

• The free plan requires no sign-up. We only receive your email if you choose to subscribe to Pro.
• We do not track your browsing history and do not read pages without your action — data is sent only when you click "Make a comment" yourself.
• We do not sell data and do not use it for advertising.

Third-party services

Comments are generated with the Anthropic (Claude) API; submitted text is processed in accordance with Anthropic's policies. Limits, entitlements and voice samples are stored in Upstash (Redis). Payments and subscription management are handled by Stripe.

Retention

Selected text is not retained after generation. Limit counters are stored temporarily and reset roughly once a day. Voice samples and billing records are kept while your account/subscription is active and removed on request. To delete your data, email us below.
